Sounds like Perez's parents are just like

Varner's (Jake Varner) . Selfish intentions if I do

say so myself. Why is this such a recurring trend?

Why would you post on here that the kid was held back? Why not just say the kid will be a Central Union next year? Were you looking for a post like the one below yours? These are rhetorical questions of course!

In reply to marriott/hyatt's left field attack .. its none of your business , why i held my son back , keep your ass.u.mptions to yourself .. I would appreciate a more positive discussion when it comes to my son and family as our actions in the wrestling community have earned this much ... When making comments such as yours why not state your name , instead of a faceless screen name so the community knows who you really are !!

Stating my name wouldn't make a bit of difference to you or anyone on this forum. I wasn't attacking your son or your family(and I apologize if you took it that way). I was commenting on another comment, made by Marc Smith. So get your facts straight Mr. Perez.

You sound like a very defensive person who likely lives vicariously through his loved ones. Or has some kind of "napoleon complex".....

What exactly are "your" actions in the wrestling community?? I know of no significant contributions, donations, benefactions, or helping hands to California Wrestling. I could be wrong.

Me, like I said it wouldn't matter if you knew who I was or not. I'm just a hotel manager who only wrestled till my sophomore year of high school and attends local south bay wrestling tournaments and meets. I'm just a nobody not a huge contributor.

Again I apologize.

And this my friends is the exact argument that Mr. Smith was looking for when he mentioned the kid was held back. Kudos Smith you were able to sit back and watch these two go at it. Very clever I must say!

There was no need to make a negative comment just because I stated he was an 8th grade cadet state champ that was held back. We have 3 10 graders who could not go to cadet state because they were 8th grade cadets that were either held back early in elementary or later on our team.

I dont see anything wrong with holding a kid back. Especially when hes an 85 lb 8th grader. Maybe some parents want them to mature and not have to wrestle guys walking around 30 lbs heavier with mustaches and tatoos. Let this be up to parents. My comment was to let the section know that micah will represent the section well next yr. I know coach perez our kids train together, he has the rite to do what he wants with his kids. I deleted the post because of people like Marriot who spout off.

Perez is correct, there are too many clowns on this site who hide behind screen names that would never say these comments if they had to own up to them.

This next yr you will just be talking about what a stud Micah Perez is. Don't be surprised if a couple other 8th graders dont attend high school this coming fall. Its a family decision.

honestly it disturbs me ... mark may have said my son was a 8th grade cadet State Champion that was held back this is true statement , if he felt that was important info to state whatever ....but your coment came directly to my family , when you attack me and my Wife, when ya called us selfish parents .... and then you apologize and insult me again by sayin napolean complex and living through my child ... wow ... where is my facts wrong !! i come on here to be positive !!! give all respect to the coaches , parents and especially the kids for all the hard work that they do!! that should be our focus...

Rafa, best thing to do with this BS is ignore it. You have nothing to justify your kids do all their talking on the mat. SD/I is glad to have you.

Personally I think too many parents are in a rush to push their kids through school. Like wrestling its a marathon not a sprint.

Sports aside, how many of you would have been better prepared for highschool/college with one extra year of maturity? I say many of us.

How many stories have we all heard about the freshman that bombs out because of maturity? So who cares what age?

If the one year makes that much of a difference on the mat then the focus is on the winning instead of the skills because once you enter college it all evens out. Only my opinion of course.

How does one go about holding back their son or daughter a grade. Are there rules involved? You would think the individual would have to have bad grades or poor attendance. Can a student with straight A's be held back, or does it have to do with date of birth cut-offs.

I don't know about anyone else, but if I were a kid again (don't we all wish we could), I would have been bummed out if all my friends moved on and I was held back. But I wasn't an awesome wrestler either.

Tough decision though

PS: Like my screen name??

How about Hilton/High C? And I agree with FANTASTICSIX. A little extra maturity would help in the later years of High School and early years of college. Maybe help with a little better attitude in school and sports. Anyway....What about the freshman?

WORKING THE SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd call it "insecurities" on the parents part. It's

the fear that the child will not live up to or match

whatever achievments they had as a kid wrestler once

they reach H.S.

Solution: "RED SHIRT EIGHT-GRADER"....morgan,varner....Bakersfield..hmmm this is spreading just like I said.

Should guys 12 years old really be required to wrestle 14 or 15 year old kids? Good God, most 12 year olds don't have pubic hair, much less the physical development of "redshirt" freshmen. Isn't this a bit of cheating? I mean when Jake Varner held his kids back a couple of grades to them an atvantage in athletics, thereby working the system, wasn't he aware of what he was doing, and by doing so wasn't he in fact cheating?

So, should we be sending kids to a middle school tournament who are more physically developed because they are chronolgically older than their peers in in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade?

This kind of "working the system" really upsets me. It smacks of taking advantage in a sport that prides itself on fair, democratic, skill, work, and dedication.

Who is working the system? Everyone? And if parents can't control the child's upbringing do we place the burden on the state? And what other fundamental right do you want our government to take away?

I'll give you this...Its obnoxious watching a parent live their life once again through their child, but our country has bigger problems than parents being over-involved. So when a good wrestler gets held back do you automatically assume- the parent is trying to work the system. Its never about grades, maturity and behavior. We don't have to analyze every parent's intent (its none of our business) and its their fundamental right to direct the upbringing of their child.

Whats fair about this sport- are weight classes and now (to the limited extent it is followed: the fat and hyrdation test). Do we get upset when the JR. or SR. 103 pounder wrestles 103 pound freshman?

Marriott/Hyatt,

I can understand your frustration and it is well founded. However, discussing it in such a personal way is demeaning to others and to yourself. Marc and Don are correct, it is the parents' decision. Some make it for whatever reason. Why should we question their intent. The people that have been around wrestling for many years will tell you that two things are common in wrestling throughout the country. One, weight cutting and two, holding a wrestler back one year. Much depends on what one wants out of wrestling. Look at Perris Graham, St Edwards, Apple Valley, Blair Academy, etc. and you will find they subscribe to the two elements mentioned above. In CA we have had many that cut and are held back, and those practices will continue. To identify those wrestlers in this forum does not serve a useful purpose. The standard may be raised because of this issue but its here to stay. Those that wrestle within a reasonable weight cutting approach and are in their legitimate grade must strive to become better wrestlers, that's all.

Look, you want to hold your kid back, not let him move on with his friends, just because you think it will make him a better athlete? Fine, I won't argue. But do it on your own dime, not mine, or the rest of us taxpayers. Kids who repeat or are held back do so because the state, acting on behalf of all of us who pay the bills, deems it necessary. You want to hold him back for your own purposes, take him out of school, pay for his extra year yourself, then bring him back. Don't expect me to help pay for your kid's extra time to grow.

That goes for kids who flunk out because they're lazy. If the kid needs an extra year because he's a little slower at picking things up, great, let him stay as long as he needs. But a kid who just doesn't try, bill his parents for the extra year, don't make me pay.

What do you mean sdwatcher? I'm not arguing with anyone. Just a simple statement of my position on holding a kid back for "non-academic" purposes. If you want an extra year of schooling for your kid, pay for it.
