February 1, 2007 GHHS: Granite Hills High School battled Valhalla to a 30-30 tie before Valhalla ran off two pins to put the match away. The final pin sealed the match, but each wrestler had a chance with their opponent on his back in the first period. This match was pivital as Valhalla would forfeit the 140 lb. match and needed a win at 135 to come away with a shot a South League Dual title when they face Monte Vista in their own gym next week.

Sharon Jacobsen Wins U.S. Women's Senior Nationals
Named OW
Sharon Jacobsen from Valhalla is a National Champion after winning Senior Women’s Freestyle in Las Vegas on April 15th. Sharon was the first woman to earn a varsity letter from Valhalla wrestling in 2002 and has been training at the Olympic TC in Colorado after wrestling for Morris University in Minnesota and Northern Michigan during her college career.
Sharon dominated her competition and was named OW at the National event. After reaching the finals on the strength of two pins and a tech. fall, Sharon pinned in the finals. Going into the national championship tournament Sharon considered her toughest opponent to be Tina George (Army) who lost a first round match and wrestled back for third place. She has wrestled George and lost twice before, the last time at Sunkist where she had George, the top seed, on her back when time expired.
Before winning the National Title, Jacobsen's top performances have been 3rd at last year's event, 3rd at Sunkist at ASU and 3rd at Shultz.
Jacobsen leaves for Japan and the World Cup, featuring the top six teams in the world. She considers the Japanese and Chinese opponents to be the most imposing in that event.

University City High School, February 18, 2006 - Valhalla finished third to a dominant Brawley team, and flirted with second place before falling short of a determined Mt. Carmel team. Monte Vista finished a strong fourth.
Many of Valhalla's Norsemen wrestled above their seeds; only two Norsemen were projected as finalists based on the seeding meeting, but five ended up wrestling under the lights at the end of the day. Landon Holmes was the biggest overachiever, finishing second while seeded only sixth. (See Photo, Landon Holmes defeats Hoover's Terry Singleton on near mat, while Jarrond Maguire upsets Nathan Nuehardt on far mat) Jarrod Maguire, seeded third, was finally able to get by Nathan Nuehardt of El Capitan on his way to the finals but fell short of the title, losing a decision to a strong Corey Cafferella of Brawley. Mark Kielbasa was a pleasant surprise in the finals. The senior, who may be the most improved wrestler on the squad this year, repeated his league Conference victory over Monte Vista's Eric Wenchell to advance to the finals. Kielbasa was unfortunate to meet Brawley's Alvaro Zermano, a high 5 Counties place winner in the finals. Kielbasa put up a good fight in defeat. In one of the night's premier matchups Kieth Juengst lost a well fought 4-3 decision to Mt. Carmel's Todd McCay. Valhalla's only champion was heavily favored Bruno Salazar who pinned Monte Vista's John Orr in 25 seconds.
In what my be the best story of the day, sophomore heavyweight Jose Cortez finally figured out how to use his imposing natural size to win his first match of the year. He then won his second and third match on the way to qualifying for Masters. Cortez' victories included a default win over host UC and two falls over El Cajon Valley and Santana.
Rounding out Valhalla's place winners were Sr. Eric Kincaid-Sharp, 5th at 160 lbs; Freshman Renzo Salazar, 4th at 130 and Senior Josue Martinez, 4th at 125. The Norsemen also won four 7th place matches; the winners of these matches serve as alternates in next week's masters tournament. Ryan Schmehr 103, Frederick Hewitt 135, Max Verdusco 145, and Chris Thomas 189, will serve as Masters alternates after finishing seventh.

El Capitan High School, February 11, 2006 - Valhalla won both the Varsity and Jr. Varsity Grossmont Conference tournaments by wide margins over the rest of the Grossmont field. In addition, they picked up the lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight OW awards as well as the Grossmont South Coach of the year award. The impressive haul of awards included 7 individual champions for Jr. Varsity and five for Varsity. Valhalla had 13 place winners on varsity and really won the tournament with the overall strength of their lineup in the wrestle backs. Valhalla and Monte Vista each had six finalists but he title was wrapped up after the third place matches when five Norsemen wrestled back to take third while three others earned the chance but took fourth. Also finishing strong were the six finalists, five of those coming away victorious. A similar theme was playing out on the JV side of the room where seven of eight Valhalla finalists came away Grossmont Conference champions. (brackets for JV will be posted here next week). Below, left to right, Bruno Salazar, Keith Juengst and Landon Holmes display their OW trophies and smiles.
Some of the individual match highlights included Jarrod Maguire's overtime loss to Nathan Nuehardt of El Capitan. This had to be the best finals match between two very sound technical wrestlers. In the semi-finals, Josue Martinez (Valhalla) and Rudy Simmons continued their career-long battle, this time Simmons (Monte Vista) won an 11-8 decision and earned the right to face Helix' talented Alvarez in the finals. Simmons started strong, but Alvarez had too many tricks for him.
The three OW's all had great finals matches. Holmes with his typical athletic style chinned whipped to a pin. Juengst used up several minutes of blood time after taking a forehead to the face early in period one (see picture in photo album). The most dramatic finish had to be the sudden throw and pin of El Capitan's T.J. Herrera by Bruno Salazar.

Grossmont Conference Coaches of the Year, Mark Gerardi, left South and El Capitan Coach, Frank Ludwig, North.

Freshman Renzo Salazar's pin over Rudy Simons (Sr.) (photo by Phillip Brents) was the turning point of the match. The big win by the talented
younger brother of Sr. Bruno Salazar gave the Norsemen a 30-18 lead and all but sealed the victory for Valhalla. The night started at 171, where the Monarchs elected to forfeit rather than send a wrestler out to face Renzo's older brother Bruno. Chris Thomas then earned a Major decision v. John Orr at 189 before Tim Puglsey (Sr.) pinned Chris Wright (Jr.), making the score 10-6, VHS. Monte Vista Sr. heavy Mehan then pinned Sophomore Jose Cortez and talented 103 lb'er Hunter Beamon pinned for Monte Vista, giving the home team the advantage 18-10. Landon Holmes won a maj. dec. against Grey before Jarrod Maguire pinned Morel. Monte Vista then made their second strategic play of the evening, they sent Moton down to face Josue Martinez, who had beaten Rudy Simons four times in a row, saving Simmons for freshman, Renzo Salazar. After Josue won a major decision and took the score to 24-18, Renzo stunned the crowd with his pin. The match was a solid victory for Renzo, who led 6-2 in the third period before finishing off a tired Simmons. Adrian Canazoles then pinned Eberhardt and Kieth Juengst won via pin before Monte Vista won on tech. fall over Matt Kielbasa and decision over Mark Kielbase at 145 and 152. Eric Kincaid-Sharp got some revenge from his loss at the RB ten way to come back and pin Eade to end the dual scoring, making the final 48-26.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the rivalry between Monte Vista and Valhalla. The winner of this dual usually takes home the Grossmont South dual title. In recognition of that rivalry the booster clubs of each of these schools has commissioned the Rivals' Cup, a crystal vase engraved with Monte Vista and Valhalla. The trophy represents rivalry and sportsmanship. The annual winner of the dual will take the trophy home and return with it the following year, adding last year's score to the engraving. Sometime over the next year the booster clubs have pledged to accurately research the historical record of the schools at the dual and add that to the engraving as well. Megan Gerardi, Valhalla Booster President, is shown, right, with the Rivals' cup.

Mark Gerardi's 2006 Norsemen traveled to what was billed as the toughest Holtville tournament in years and put on a respectable showing. Eight medalists, including three finalists and one champion garnered a team second at the Holtville, a favorite venue for the team.
Left home with injuries or personal business were four Valhalla starters, Landon Holmes (112), Matt Kielbasa (145), Eric Kincaid-Sharp (160) and Cortez (275). Their fill-ins gathered valuable team points and in the case of CIF fourth place finisher Matt Kielbasa, his twin brother (usually a starter at 152) filled in nicely with a 5th place medal. Also filling in, at 160, younger brother of CIF champion Blake Tasted, John-Paul wrestled on day two, earning valuable team points.
Among the eight medal winners for Valhalla was Chris Thomas, a standout linebacker for the Valhalla football Norsemen, in only his first year of high school wrestling. Chris (pictured below, left) was a long-time Valhalla kid’s club participant but did not compete for Valhalla until this, his Jr. Year. Wrestling at both 189 and 215 this season Chris is advancing rapidly and will be a big contributor down the stretch for Valhalla.
Keith Juengst (below, right) was the lone Valhalla champion, returning to form from his sophomore year when he went deep into State Championship competition bringing home a 6th place medal. Juengst was named Lightweight OW and received and an award for best takedown.

“Continue the Tradition”
October, 2005
Valhalla High School Wrestling is founded on principles of solid citizenship, great physical & mental development, and high academic achievement. Hard work, dedication to self & sport are paramount ideals instilled in each team member. Ideals like these are the foundation of lofty achievement not only during high school but throughout each individual life. Valhalla has fixed the standard for high school wrestling behavior grounded in sportsmanship; this tradition is acquired from the past, adhered to in the present, and dedicated to the future.
The Parent Booster Club was formed and continues today as a means of support to our team and promotion of Valhalla Wrestling ideals. As parents of wrestlers and valkyries we know and accept wrestling as more than just a sport, it is a way of life, a positive influence for our young adults with a set of values important to who we want them to be when they graduate and go into our world.
In order to provide for the type of program needed we must spend some extra time to raise funds necessary to compete at a level that provides our children with maximum wrestling knowledge and proficiency. Continuous funds are needed for team travel, tournament registrations, equipment refurbishment and purchase. Helping to provide these funds, Boosters staff-fund raising events such as snack bars at local tournaments, two-way-sponsor letters and our 13th annual casino night all help generate dollars for the program.
This letter is a personal invitation to you asking you to get involved. If everyone helps individual participate will be minimal, maybe a couple hours at a tournament or home dual meet, help driving to away trips or following up with the sponsor letters. Please look over the attached paperwork, fill in your name where you ha interest and return it. If you are unable to give of your time we understand and we ask that you contribute financially or find an individual/corporate sponsor that is willing to make an annual contribution. Additionally we are looking for folks that want to help with the club year round, if you would like to take a more active roll we want to hear from you too.
Thank you in advance for your precious time and resources, it is only through your dedication and active participation that we can “Continue the Tradition” of Valhalla Wrestling.
