Always interesting how things have changed. Who are our state champions coming home? I think we have a bunch of medals coming home.

Would love it if the SD section won 15 medals but I am not sure that will happen this year. RB has their 3 studs, Curtis from LCC is looking great and Poway might win 5-6. That is 10 and I think if the section averages 10 per year then it will keep 4 qualifiers.

Hansen and Ortiz are also looking good with chances to medal so I do see some some upside but the California state tournament is unlike any other. Many years I have thought someone was nearly a lock to medal and it didn't happen.

Based on state rankings the following are ranked in the top 8 and can hopefully finish at or above their seed.

This would be 11 placers

There are 3 others ranked inside the top 12 that could increase the medal count to 14.

108 Gonzales (POW)
115 Bobzien (POW)
128 Miranda (POW)
145 Gandara (POW)
145 Le (RB)
154 Badgett (RB)
172 Hernandez (POW)
184 Curtis (LCC)
184 Jovero (RB)
197 Hansen (O)
287 Johnson (POW)

Top 12

122 Lopez (POW) #12
134 Tolentino (POW) #9
160 Ortiz (IMP) #12

I am not that smart but how many medals to we need to maybe get a 5th qualifier? And for how long do we need to keep this up?

I think the SD section would need to average 14 medals per year to get a fifth qualifier under the current formula. It looks like 11 is needed to maintain 4 qualifiers. I think the number of qualifiers is currently reviewed every three years (maybe every two, I don't recall for sure).

As it stands, the SD #4 qualifiers, in general, have not performed very well at state. The southern section currently receives 9 but can make a pretty strong case for a tenth based on their performance. The southern #9 and Central #10 have historically performed better than the SD #4.

Without Poway and the medals they provide, the SD section would probably only get 2 qualifiers, maybe only 1. I think the overall quality of wrestling in the section needs to dramatically improve for a #5 qualifier to be competitive.

Currently we have 7 guaranteed medals and we have another 11 in the consolations. There is an opportunity to walk out with 18 medals, since we do not wrestle each other in the blood round at all.

From what I understand the SDS #4 qualifier's performance has nothing to do with the section keeping the number of qualifiers, it's solely based on how many medals the section averages over the allotted time frame.
